So I have this thing with hot sauce and chili oil and some things you just can't eat without these sauces. I put chili oil in my tomato pasta dishes and I love my wings spicy. But this time I decided to try out a hot chili sauce that has just come to Belgium from California, USA, and is something people who love spicy food are anxious to try out over here.
Tapatío Hot Sauce is finally available in our tiny country! So I decided to try it out and make a little recipe around it.
These appetizers are full of crabby goodness! I did not add too many different spices to the actual crab because I am serving them with a spicy dip and I did not want them to lose the crab flavour.
So here goes!
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
- tinned crab (a small regular tin)
- 2 handfuls of panko breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- some salt & pepper
- 1 tsp of smoked paprika powder
- 1 tbsp of cream cheese
For the dip:
- 1 tbsp of cream cheese, or if you like it runny, sour cream
- Tapatío Hot Sauce to taste.
- some coriander for decoration and it goes nicely with
- lime juice can be sprinkled over the bites if you like
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
- Pre-heat your broiler.
- You need to start by making the mix for the bites. Drain the tinned crab from any juices and put it in a bowl. Mix together with the panko, egg, some pepper, paprika and cream cheese.
- Check the consistency, because you will need to make small balls with the paste. If it is too dry, add some cream cheese. If it is too liquid, add some more panko.
- Next, form the bites by rolling small amounts of the paste between your hands like you would meatballs. Make the bite size, not too large.
- Place them all on a piece of baking paper which has been sprayed with cooking spray or alternatively you can grease it with some olive oil and a paper towel. Make sure they are spread around evenly and don't touch one another or they might end up sticking to each other.
- You can place some butter on top of the bites so they will brown nicely. But be gentle, less is more in this case.
- Place them all under the broiler and leave to cook until browned. Probably 5-10 minutes, just keep an eye on them!
- In the meantime, make your dip by mixing the Tapatío Hot Sauce with either some cream cheese or sour cream. Both are nice, the sour cream will accentuate the acidity of the hot sauce.
- When they are ready, serve them immediately. If you like you can sprinkle some lime juice over the bites. Just make sure you dip it in that Tapatío dip!
Double dips are allowed in this case ;)
